Greenore is a unique Victorian Railway Village located at the tip of the Cooley Peninsula on Carlingford Lough in County Louth. It was built in the 1870’s as a ferryport/tourist destination and operated by the London and North Western Railway Company. The village developed when the railway connecting Newry and Dundalk to the port of Greenore was first opened.

The village consisted of five different types of workers houses, a Police Station, a School, a Schoolmasters house, a Co-operative building and of course the magnificent Grand Hotel (recently demolished by the current owners of the port despite recommendations from both An Bord Pleanala and the County Louth Conservation Officer that it be put on the Protected Structures List).

The railway closed in 1951 and in 1954 the port was purchased by the O’Rahilly family who utilised it as a commercial port. In 2002 the port was purchased in a Joint-Venture between Dublin Port Co and One51(formerly IAWS).

Greenore boasts a magnificent 18-hole semi-links golf course developed in 1886 by George L. Baille. The Golf Club has always played an important part in the life of the village and attracts many tourists to the area.

The village is located on Carlingford Lough with the Cooley Mountains on the southern shores and the world famous Mourne Mountains on the northern shores. The Lough is heavily protected both nationally as an AONB(Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) an ASSI(Area of Special Scientific Interest) a pNHA(proposed Natural Heritage Area) and internationally through the European Directives as an SPA(Special Protection Area) an SAC(Special Area of Conservation) and the European Communities (Quality of Shellfish Waters) Regulations.
